Campus Visit: University of Notre Dame
I have the privilege of visiting campuses across the country to help students and families find their best-fit school. My recent visit to the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, was a powerful reminder of what makes this university unique: tradition, community, and a commitment to helping students grow into “good people doing unprecedented things.”
A Supportive Community from Day One
At Notre Dame, your support network starts the moment you step on campus. Each residence hall is more than just a place to sleep-it’s a built-in community, led by a team of caring adults (rectors), student resident directors, and senior resident assistants. These mentors help students adjust, find friends, and feel at home. The tradition of strong dorm communities is central to Notre Dame life, with each hall hosting its own charity events and even its own chapel and dorm Mass-sometimes complete with milkshakes or other treats after services!
Notre Dame’s campus is as beautiful as it is historic, with iconic landmarks like the Golden Dome, Basilica of the Sacred Heart, and The World of Life Mural (aka Touchdown Jesus). South Bend offers plenty of amenities, from grocery stores like Trader Joe’s, and other shops and restaurants at Eddy Commons to a vibrant local community. About a third of students have cars on campus (allowed starting spring of freshman year), making it easy to explore beyond campus. Tradition is everywhere: from football games (season tickets are $240 for all students, with no waitlist) to dorm events, and charity events. About 40% of seniors choose to stay on campus, a testament to the strong sense of belonging fostered by the residential system. Groups like PRISM ND provide social and activity support, and Fisher Undergraduate Apartments offer a welcoming option for trans and non-binary students who want to choose their roommates.
Admissions and Financial Aid
Notre Dame uses a holistic admissions process. You’ll need one core subject teacher recommendation and a counselor letter (no more than two letters total). Test scores are currently optional, but you can submit AP or IB scores in place of the SAT or ACT. Essays are critical, since there are no interviews, your writing is your voice. Be authentic, show curiosity, and let your sense of self shine through. Restrictive Early Action (REA) is the best bet for merit scholarships, and about half of each class comes through REA. Notre Dame meets 100% of demonstrated financial need, and both the FAFSA and CSS Profile are required for aid consideration.
Who Thrives at Notre Dame?
Notre Dame students are often described as “good people doing unprecedented things”-collaborative, service-oriented, and open to discussion. If you’re excited by tradition, eager to be part of a close-knit community, and ready to engage with different perspectives, Notre Dame could be a great fit. It may not be the best environment for students who aren’t open to dialogue about politics, religion, and the world around them.
Final Thoughts
Notre Dame’s blend of rigorous academics, deep traditions, and a welcoming, supportive community makes it a standout choice for many students. If you’re looking for a college where you’ll be challenged, supported, and inspired to make a difference, I encourage you to explore Notre Dame further-whether through a campus visit, virtual tour, or connecting with current students.
